It stands along the banks of the Kamenka River and the scenery gives you an idea of the boundless expanses of Russia. The local color and atmosphere have been preserved by the descendants of Russian craftsmen and today Suzdal is a unique architectural museum with its landmarks dated as early as the 12th century. The Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral, The Monastery of Deposition, Alexandrovsky Convent, the Savior Monastery of St. Euthymius, the Intercession are among the best examples of Russian white-stone architecture. The Museum of Wooden Architecture illustrates old peasant life in this region: wooden churches, log houses, windmills, a barn and lots of tools and handicrafts. On display in the 17th-century townsman's house is the furnishing of that time: Russian stove, carved wooden table and benches, birchen cradle suspended from the ceiling.
The ancient town Vladimir is located about 30 miles to the south of Suzdal. It was founded by Prince Vladimir Monomakh in 1108 and soon became the capital of the region thanks to the sacred icon of Our Lady, which once had been brought from Constantinople. From 1299 to the middle of the 14th century Vladimir was the capital of Russia. The ancient monuments as old as the 12th century remain in town and its suburbs. The Cathedral of St. Dmitry and the Cathedral of Assumption are considered two of the most beautiful buildings in Russia.
